GREENGUARD

Countertop options today are vast, with ranges in prices and materials that include concrete, recycled paper, wood, metal, stone and recycled glass.  Finding an indestructible countertop may be impossible, but consider and weigh the top priority of your application. Properties of certain countertops are better suited for withstanding hot temperatures, scratches and stains.  Dark recycled content paper countertops are great for those concerned about staining. A concrete and recycled glass composite top can be ideal when considering scratch and heat resistance. With every option, also consider the required maintenance and care of your countertop. Some of the best advice remains true today with all countertops: clean surfaces regularly, and use a trivet or hot pad for items coming off the stove or out of the oven.

What Makes Countertops Green?

Recycled Content
Rapidly Renewable Materials
Regional Manufacturing
Reclaimed or Salvaged
Durability

5 Considerations for Consumers:

  1. Care and maintenance may include additional sealing over lifetime of product
  2. Weigh the ‘green’ attributes for what will be the best decision and choice for you. For example, maybe the product is manufactured with recycled content, but contains high embodied energy due to transportation
  3. Avoid toxic chemicals that can off-gas and harm your home’s indoor air quality, compromising the healthy of your family
  4. Consider potential re-use or recycling options for the countertop when you’re ready for a change
  5. Review the properties of countertops by looking at durability, scratch resistance, heat resistance and maintenance in addition to the targeted ‘green’ attributes
